The competition is the starting point for taking off into the sky. You have to decide for yourself where to fly based on the knowledge and sensibilities you have gained from experience. One thing I can say is that the win pushed me towards making music for the rest of my life. Until then, I wasn't sure if I should continue playing the piano.

Biography
Pianist Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu burst onto the world stage in October 2021 when he won the
International Chopin Piano Competition, the first Canadian ever to take first prize in the
long history of this most prestigious competition.
The fresh, spontaneous dynamism and
flawless technique that characterised his playing throughout the various stages (“his
Concerto in E minor … held poetry and virtuosity in wonderful balance” Daily Telegraph)
not only convinced the jury but have since been winning over critics and audiences at
sold-out venues worldwide.

Berlin, 29 March 2022. Deutsche Grammophon is delighted to mark World Piano Day by announcing the signing of an exclusive agreement with Bruce Liu. The 24-year-old Canadian pianist shot “from near obscurity to rock-star status in the classical music world” (The Globe and Mail) after winning the 18th International Chopin Piano Competition last autumn, since when his performances worldwide have been showered with critical acclaim.
Royal Festival Hall, London. Last year’s winner of the International Chopin competition, Bruce Liu, was a late substitution for this all-Tchaikovsky programme, but made light and elegant work of the challenging Second Concerto.
